SYL

SYL (Suomen ylioppilaskuntien liitto), i.e. the National Union of University Students in Finland, is a student organisation which represents approximately 130,000 students in Finland. All student unions in Finnish universities are members of SYL, and SYL aims to ensure that all students would feel well and have equal opportunities to educate, learn and develop themselves.

SYL was facing problems with their old website; updating and developing it started being cumbersome, and the visual look was in need of a renewal as well. Upon starting the process of renewing their website, SYL wanted to offer a better mobile experience for all visitors – meaning accessibility needed to be considered as well.

They chose a familiar system as their CMS; WordPress had been in use already for years and their team was comfortable using it. The flexible possibilities provided to content managers was a deciding factor, as many people would be inputting and editing content on the site autonomously.

We built the site using flexible and modular content sections as we wanted to have a multipurpose tool for several possible use cases around different types of content; e.g. blog posts, announcements, statements and so on. In addition, custom features were built for listing and sorting grants, as that particular part of the site is used by a ton of students.
